US NHTSA says 70% of accidents caused by ADAS are Tesla
From July 2021 to May of this year, 392 ADAS-related traffic accidents occurred in the United States for about 10 months. About 70% of these accidents occurred in Tesla vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 392 ADAS-related car accidents between July 1 last year and May 15 this year. Six of them were killed and five were seriously injured.
Of the nearly 400 accidents, 273 were caused by Tesla. Of these, a total of 98 serious crash accidents were investigated. In 11 traffic accidents, 6 people were killed and 5 people were seriously injured.
In addition, Honda had 90 accidents, Subaru had 10 accidents, Ford had 5 accidents related to autonomous driving technology, and the remaining 8 companies each had fewer than 5 accidents. Hyundai Motor reported one case.
The NHTSA required automakers to report ADAS-related accidents in June last year as autonomous driving technology spreads along with electric vehicles. The announcement today is the first data collected since accident reporting became mandatory.
However, the NHTSA emphasized that the results alone should not be used to draw conclusions about the safety of autonomous driving systems by automakers. This is because factors such as the number of cars equipped with ADAS by manufacturer, the frequency with which drivers use the function, and how much they did not concentrate on driving were not taken into account.
Meanwhile, the NHTSA has also released additional crash data for a Level 4 autonomous vehicle that requires little human intervention. During the same period, there were a total of 130 collisions with fully autonomous vehicles, and Google Waymo (62) accounted for about half of them.
