BMW and McLaren Collaborate on High-Performance Electric Vehicles... Carbon platform joint development
BMW and McLaren have started a joint development project for high-performance electric vehicles, according to major foreign media such as British Car Magazine.
According to local reports, the two companies plan to introduce two different new cars by sharing a platform that has increased the proportion of carbon fiber application. The two sides plan to present the results of the collaboration within 2026 at the earliest or 2028 at the latest.
McLaren is preparing an electric hypercar using a carbon fiber platform. The new car, which will be equipped with four electric motors and display the system's maximum output of 1,088 horsepower, is said to be the focus of the brand's various weight reduction know-how. According to sources, McLaren electric vehicles will be produced in small quantities in consideration of their rarity.
BMW plans to build a coupe-type crossover on the same platform. The vehicle is said to have a style similar to that of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo by combining an SUV style based on a design similar to the 8 Series. However, it is not known whether it will even share a powertrain with McLaren.
The possibility of collaboration between the two companies has been raised since last year. Earlier, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on the joint development of the platform, and at the same time, they continued to work closely with McLaren's largest shareholder, the Bahrain Sovereign Wealth Fund. Based on this, some even argued that BMW would acquire McLaren's auto division.
