Joby Aviation Patent Application Trend by Year: Over the past 10 years, Joby Aviation has applied for a total of 64 patents, mainly in the US.

The US’ Joby Aviation, which develops a vertical take-off and landing personal aircraft (eVTOL) to be used in air taxi services, is attracting attention as a ‘dark horse’ in the global drone market as it is actively building a patent portfolio.


According to the '2021 Drone Daebu - Joby Aviation, a company to watch out for' analyzed by IP International (CEO Choi Seung-wook), a company specializing in drone-related intellectual property rights and standards, while most research and product development have been conducted privately, there has been a passive strategy in patent disclosure. It was found that Joby Aviation, which had been taken, had applied for at least 40 patents in the past 2019 and 2020.

Over the past 10 years, Joby Aviation has applied for a total of 64 patents, mainly in the United States. It has applied for 4 patents in Korea, secured 5 patents in Europe and Japan, 2 patents in China, and 1 patent in India. Recently, the company is also active in international patent (PCT) applications.

Joby Aviation: A startup founded in 2009 based in California, USA, is developing vertical take-off and landing electric airplanes (eVTOL) that can operate in air taxi services. Recently, the focus has been on certification, initial production, large-scale production, and laying the groundwork for commercial operation. Joby has completed more than 1,000 test flights to date, and aims for aircraft certification in 2023 and global commercial service in 2024.

에어 택시 서비스에 활용할 수직이착륙 개인항공기(eVTOL)를 개발하는 미국 ‘조비 에비에이션(Joby Aviation)’이 최근 특허 포트폴리오 구축에 적극 나서면서 글로벌 드론 시장에서 ‘다크호스’로 주목받고 있다.

 

드론 관련 지식재산권 및 표준 전문 기업인 아이피인터내셔날(대표 최승욱)이 분석한 ‘2021 드론 대해부-주목해야할 기업, Joby Aviation’ 보고서에 따르면 그동안 대부분의 연구 및 제품개발을 비공개로 진행하면서 특허 공개에 소극적인 전략을 취했던 Joby Aviation이 지난 2019년과 2020년에 최소 40건 이상의 특허를 출원한 것으로 나타났다.

최근 10년간 Joby Aviation은 미국을 중심으로 총 64건의 특허를 출원했다. 한국에도 4건의 특허를 출원했으며, 유럽 및 일본에 각각 5건, 중국 2건, 인도에 1건의 권리를 확보하고 있다. 최근 이 회사는 국제특허(PCT) 출원에도 적극적이다.
